The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has taken steps to remove the Sri Lanka Army from the responsibility of printing driving licences.

The Cabinet has given permission to assign this responsibility to a private firm since there is a backlog of around 800,000 licences to be printed and that there are not enough printers to complete the task.

On the recommendation of the DMT Commissioner General, Transport and Highways Minister Bandula Gunawardana has submitted the Cabinet paper.

Accordingly, it has been planned to print the backlog of licences and hand them over to the owners within three months.

The Sri Lanka Army was assigned the responsibility of printing driving licences from January 01, 2022.
